An Overrated Virtue

Recently, a couple of pals accused me of being uncompromising and that I do not make exceptions. (This was in the context of how if I didn't want to do something, I wasn't going to do it for anybody's sake).

But isn't compromising an overrated Asian virtue?  If one begins to compromise on the small things, can one live life the way one wants to?  Too often we give up things for our foolish-rational-twin, for the brats, for the bosses, for the pals, for the partners, for the folks (this is forgivable I think), for society. I am no rebel, but must I really compromise for the little things, and one day wake up to find that I am an unfulfilled person?

Its 4 in the night, and i stumbled upon this. I know the context and also the fact that we have discussed this in the past:) but still feel compelled to write, since i feel completely opposite.

** Sermon & Idealism alert **

1. No, don't draw the conclusion that if one cpmpromises on small things one will get into the habit and end up doing the same for bigger, more imp things

2. In any relationship that means something to the two of you, it will never be the case that that you are the one who is always making the compromises (if it is, the relationship ain't worth it)

3. Small compromises (or in most cases decisions) may just end up in you doing something u would have preferred not to, but would end up meaning a lot to the other person. Always remember, there would never be a relationship when you won't expect something of the other other person....and when that happens, he would be the one feeling exploited

4. Coming to big compromises, again its bad if you are the one always doing it. But some have to be made keeping in mind just how imp is the relatioship for you in your mind. They just have to be made, and i am sure you yourself would do that when you come to it. just that if you have these feelings of compromise being a "asian overrated virtue" in the back of your mind, you will still do it but end up being a much unhappier soul at the end of the day for havivng done it. So don't think so strongly about this.

****alert end****

Anecdotes of ..... Gobind Ballabh Pant ji

Govind Ballabh Pant ji was clearly a man of many great qualities and public service to the nation. However, he was very traditional in his views of women. ...........The first day all went well and at dusk we reached the village where we were to spend the night. The villagers, always hospitable, insisted on supplementing the evening meal we had brought with us. Later, when it was time to retire, I found that the little village schoolhouse had been swept and cleaned and all our bedding rolls laid out side by side. For some reason I had expected a place of my own to sleep in. Seeing consternation on my face, which I could not hide, one of my colleagues explained gently that this was how it was going to be throughout the campaign, but I must not mind, they would all take care of me. .......Ranjit and I had agreed that we should phone each other whenever possible and give news of how our respective campaigns were progressing. I phoned the second evening. “Everything is going very well,” I ...
